In the Trenches: How Our Investment Timeline Works

Go behind the lines of how a VC deal really comes together.

In Venture Capital, clarity and speed are fundamental to success. At Boost Capital Partners, we believe transparency in the investment process creates value for both founders and investors.

Keep in mind: while this guide illustrates a typical investment timeline, our actual process remains flexible and adapts to each unique opportunity.

In this post, we’re bringing you directly into the trenches—revealing how our investment timeline can work, step-by-step, from identifying a potential deal to final approval.

1. Lead Generation: Where it all begins

Every investment journey starts by sourcing promising opportunities. Typically, these opportunities come through three distinct channels:

  • Cold Inbound: Leads originating from websites, social media platforms, or through cold outreach. These often bring in fresh perspectives and introduce us to unexpected, exciting startups.
  • Inbound Leads: Opportunities introduced through trusted personal or professional networks, generally well-qualified and closely aligned with investment criteria.
  • Outbound Leads: Leads actively sought by investment teams targeting specific industries, verticals, or market trends, usually providing strong alignment with strategic investment goals.

2. Deal Assessment: Navigating the Opportunity Funnel

Once an interesting opportunity emerges, it undergoes structured assessment phases designed to quickly gauge its potential:

Initially, the team conducts a quick evaluation—typically within 2–3 days—to determine preliminary fit. Depending on this initial assessment, other team members may become involved to further scrutinize the opportunity.

When the opportunity progresses, it’s discussed within dedicated Investment Committee (IC) meetings. The initial IC serves as an introduction and early-stage evaluation, while subsequent meetings (if needed) address deeper questions, due diligence outcomes, and final decision-making.

3. Weekly IC Calls: The Heart of Decision Making

Investment decisions come together through structured weekly IC calls, central to ensuring thoughtful discussion and rigorous analysis:

  • Before each call, the opportunity’s Champion creates a Short Memo, outlining key points, considerations, and preliminary insights. These memos are shared in advance, allowing the team to read, comment, and prepare questions in advance to ensure productive discussions.
  • During the IC meeting, the team discusses, debates, and conducts a preliminary vote to decide if the deal merits further investigation or should be passed over at this stage.
  • To ensure thorough analysis and debate, opportunities often have a Companion—a team member specifically designated to critically assess assumptions, challenge biases, and contribute to more robust decision-making processes.

4. Leveraging Automation: Speed and Quality in Balance

Speed matters in Venture Capital, but never at the expense of quality. To strike this balance, we strategically use automation and AI integrations, simplifying repetitive tasks and freeing our team for higher-value activities such as strategic evaluation and deeper founder interactions.

Here’s how automation enhances our investment process:

  • AI-Assisted Initial Assessments
Our Short Memos—crucial initial summaries of potential investments—are quickly generated using integrated AI, significantly accelerating the early-stage evaluation process.
  • Streamlined Preliminary Voting
Automation simplifies preliminary voting, enabling rapid team feedback. Opportunities with positive initial results swiftly move forward into detailed due diligence.
  • Automated Comprehensive Reports
When deeper evaluation is required, automation efficiently compiles thorough Long Memos. These reports consolidate all relevant due diligence, ensuring clarity for informed committee decisions.
  • Centralized Information
Voting outcomes, notes, and reports are automatically centralized within our CRM, facilitating seamless collaboration, transparency, and team alignment.

By effectively leveraging automation, we empower our team to concentrate on meaningful insights and informed decisions—creating greater value in every step of our investment journey.

5. Adaptability Under Fire: Discipline Meets Efficiency

Timelines, structures, and discipline matter greatly—but successful investing also demands adaptability. Exceptional circumstances often require exceptional flexibility. While we maintain clear guidelines and structured decision-making frameworks, our investment process remains fluid enough to swiftly adapt, seizing opportunities where quick, decisive action can make a difference. Our framework allows flexibility, ensuring rapid adaptation to dynamic scenarios—crucial to seize high-potential opportunities.

Discipline meets efficiency through thoughtful flexibility, allowing us to capture promising opportunities without compromising diligence.

Conclusion

Our investment timeline is built for precision, clarity, and speed. Our disciplined yet adaptable approach, combined with technology-driven automation, allows us to efficiently identify and invest in high-quality opportunities, delivering consistent value to our investors and portfolio companies.
